HostGator Coupon – How do you get the Best Deal?
Whichever HostGator coupon you choose, it’s important to remember that the longest subscription of 36 months gives you the best deal, which is precisely the reason why I recommend it. 3 years gives you the biggest discount, but the less obvious benefit is that you won’t be affected by any price rises that may turn up in the meantime.
So, if you’re in need of a new hosting plan and your eye is on HostGator, play around with different codes to find out which one offers you the best discount rate. On special occasions like Black Friday, Cyber Money, Halloween, Independence Day, Earth Day, or others, you can often get even more generous discounts than usual; up to a whopping 65% off in some cases.

HostGator Detailed Introduction
HostGator provides a wide array of services, but what the one that springs to mind for most people is its competitively-priced shared-hosting offerings. Customers can select from three shared hosting services - Hatchling, Baby, and Business - each one increasing in features and support options as the price rises. HostGator also provides reseller plans, VPS hosting, and dedicated servers, along with an affiliate programme.
Current CEO Brent Oxley founded this privately-owned company in 2002 while still at university, and today, HostGator boasts a pretty impressive 8 million domains hosted on behalf of 400,000 customers in 200 or so countries. HostGator began its existence in Florida (‘Gator’ had to come from somewhere!) and grew rapidly before upping sticks and moving to Texas in 2007.
The organization now calls Houston home with an additional Texas office in Austin, and overseas presences in India (found at http://hostgator.in) and Brazil (http://www.hostgator.com.br.) The company employs 200 people right now but that’s a figure that’s fully expected to double in the next couple of years.
HostGator Hosting Plans
Each of HostGator’s servers on its shared, reseller and VPS plans runs Linux (CentOS is stipulated on the Linux plans). For dedicated servers, users have a choice between Linux or Windows; with the Windows boxes running Windows Server 2008 R2 at the time of writing.
Shared hosting is covered by three plans. The lowest spec plan, Hatchling, offers a one-domain package with no extra domains and it lacks anonymous FTP, so although basic it would be perfectly adequate for hosting a blog.
For those users wanting more domains, an upgrade to Baby or Business is the way to go and for those looking for anonymous FTP, the Business package will take care of that requirement. Note that the Hatchling plan does not let you have dedicated IPs; Baby does (but they’re chargeable) and Business throws them in for free.
With Business, you also get private SSL (the others are shared) and a toll-free number to use as you choose. This sounds nice but is only really of benefit to US customers or those marketing to customers who are also U.S.-based. That said, for an additional fee that number can be extended to serve Canada, so it may be worth a look.
HostGator specializes in shared hosting (hmmm, could it be that there’s a clue in the name?), but there are other services it can turn its hand to as well.
There’s reseller hosting, which is divided into five plans according to disk space, bandwidth and the number of domains required. Apart from that, the specification on each plan is more or less the same.
VPS hosting is divided into nine plans and once again, you’ll have to hone your list of required features using the pricing chart to come up with the appropriate monthly fee and a service that suits.
The price for dedicated servers varies depending on which resources you need. It’s the same outlay for both Windows and Linux hosting, but the available software will obviously differ depending on which OS you have.
If you’d like to run Java, you’ll have to get a VPS or dedicated plan, but Python comes installed on all servers.
HostGator doesn't offer cloud hosting as of this writing.
HostGator uses The Planet to rent its data center space, using four of its Texas facilities. Power back-ups, constant monitoring and fire detection from its on-site staff ensure that all 12,000 servers keep humming safely and securely. It uses a total of 10 different fiber providers, making use of Time Warner and AT&T hardware. HostGator doesn’t publish any stats but currently offer a 99.9% uptime guarantee and an RSS feed provides service status updates.
Apart from dedicated servers, all accounts are backed up on a weekly basis. If you supply a backup file yourself and need to restore it, that’s free, otherwise, HostGator charges $15.
HostGator hosts upwards of 8 million domains and they’re transparent about their staff, services, and resources. The company has a fair few high-profile partners in its stable with Cisco, Dell, and AT&T among the more recognizable names. To their credit, they don’t permit overselling, so the volume you’re given is the volume you’ll get. A VPS or dedicated server is the notable exception here where you’re free to oversell, but at your own risk.
HostGator’s options for support are impressively comprehensive for a low-cost provider of shared hosting. You have access to 24/7 live chat support, an FAQ section, and email or phone support (which is free within the U.S.) You may wish to note that it’s not apparent where support staff are based.
Customers can log in to a portal which lets them upgrade their account. It’s also a gateway to Support and billing, user forums, a knowledge base and helpful video tutorials that address some of the most common configuration questions that users come across. This account login is different from the Cpanel login. Transfer requests are actioned smoothly via a convenient online form.
HostGator in the News
In June 2012, a DDOS attack launched by a hacking group named #TheHolocaust hit HostGator and another group called UGNazi used a similar approach to attacking other payment processing companies and hosts. To their credit, HostGator had their servers up and running again within four hours
HostGator Control Panel
Cpanel 11 is featured as standard with all HostGator’s Linux plans, and users can pick from a wide choice of themes. Cpanel offers access to all the features you’ll need, including webmail, DNS settings for Google Apps and one-click backups.
Reseller accounts are also provided for with WHM and Cpanel. Both are optional if you take VPS and HostGator’s Linux dedicated server hosting plans. On a Windows dedicated server, Plesk 11.x comes with the price.
Additionally, on VPS plans, HostGator provide Virtuozzo, an administration package for use with the server itself.
All customers are given access to a separate billing area to download invoices and organize payments.
HostGator’s Business shared plan comes with a toll-free number for US callers. This can be extended to Canadian customers for the cost of an optional extra charge applied to each call. If you cancel your plan, you’ll lose the number, but if you want to keep it, contact HostGator first to let them know you want to take it as a paid service. After that, just receive at least one call per month and your line will stay active.
Most packages come with SiteBuilder, osCommerce, Fantastico (a range of php scripts), SiteStudio, WordPress, Joomla, one-click installs and a nice selection of capable stats packages. On dedicated servers, you can assign individual SiteBuilder templates and accounts to your clients.
HostGator also provides $100 Adwords credit on all their shared hosting plans, and reseller accounts get a free upgrade to an eNom domain reseller account. A manual set-up is required for this, but it’s a pretty effortless process that’s done in a couple of minutes.
HostGator Money-Back Guarantee / Cancellation Policy
Cancel your shared, VPS hosting or reseller in the first 45-days for a full refund. Dedicated servers aren’t eligible and costs incurred, such as installation and admin fees or domain name purchases, are also non-refundable.
For cancellation requests, use the dedicated online form and your account will be cancelled within 48 hours. If you think a refund is due, reply to the cancellation email and request it as this isn’t automatic. Refunds will be sent via credit card or PayPal.
HostGator proudly claims to be eco-friendly, which seems perfectly reasonable given that they offset their emissions, and use 130% wind power via Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). When you consider that HostGator has 1% of the world’s internet traffic flowing to and from its 12,000 servers, that’s a rather notable achievement. While its pricing is equally as low as other shared hosting providers, its plans are very comprehensive and scalable, which makes it easy to buy a small shared plan and upgrade to a higher-spec shared hosting, VPS or dedicated server package later, as your needs dictate.
HostGator also puts particular emphasis on user help, which is great because these days large hosting companies that offer free and efficient live chat, phone, and email support are as scarce as hen’s teeth. The added bits, like the eNom account and affiliate programme, make them an ideal choice for a new business that’s intending to grow or white-label. Overall, it brings a rounded feature set to the table for a decent price with a wealth of extra features to keep loyal customers happy.
